Messages from the Cataloging Committee

Cataloging permissions change

Beginning June 30, 2012 the permissions for Cat-2 catalogers will change. Cat-2 catalogers will no longer be able to create new MARC records, batchload new records or edit MARC records. Only Cat-1 catalogers will be able to create new MARC records, add records by batchloading and edit MARC records.

If there are Cat-2 catalogers performing these functions, those staff members will need training to obtain their Cat-1 certification. If you need Cat-1 training before the new Cataloging Policy goes in effect June 30, please sign up at the links below or check back to the schedule on Weekly Update blog soon as the cataloging committee will be planning a class for September.

Advanced cataloging training

This webinar will be presented over two days. Staff must participate in both days in order to receive your Cat1 status. Please register for both Parts 1 and 2. All attendees must have attended the basic cataloging class or have been trained by an Evergreen Certified CAT1 cataloger.

July 17, 9:00-NOON, Webinar 1
July 18, 9:00-NOON, Webinar 2

Adoption of RDA

The Evergreen Indiana Cataloging Committee wants make sure that everyone is aware of the upcoming changes to cataloging descriptive standards from AACR2 to RDA. The Library of Congress and other national libraries have announced their plan to adopt RDA in March of 2013. This means that records created at the Library of Congress will be created using new cataloging rules. Since the LOC is adopting it, Evergreen Indiana will be adopting it as well.

Neglecting to adopt the new content standards would cause long-term issues since the Library of Congress is such a reliable and important source of free catalog records. The transition will be a challenge, but in the long run, not adopting the new rules would slow down cataloging even more. The Cataloging Committee wants to make sure everyone is prepared for the change and the recommendation is that staff members begin learning about RDA now.

Things to do to prepare:

1) Budget to purchase the RDA Toolkit and/or the print version. We are currently gathering information on what consortial deals might be available.

2) Start learning about RDA.

3) Budget for more in-depth classes on RDA for cataloging staff next year.

4) Non-cataloging staff will need to be aware of the changes as well.

  • Expect some slow down in cataloging speed as catalogers learn the new rules
  • Staff will need to be aware that there will be some changes in catalog display and perhaps searching.

Please feel free to contact the Cataloging Committee (sarahc@zionsville.lib.in.us) or the cataloging listserv (evergreen_indiana-catalog@lists.in.gov) with questions and suggestions to make this transition go as smoothly as possible. The cataloging committee will not provide RDA training courses but will make course recommendations. It will be the responsibility of each library to make sure the cataloging staff gets the training it needs.

Circulation Committee

The Circulation Committee is looking for new members! The committee meets quarterly throughout the year with September 18 being the first meeting for any additional members. Participation on the committee is a great opportunity for exchanging workflow information and library circulation tips, as well as contributing to the consortium policies and procedures. Please get in contact with the Evergreen Indiana Coordinator (sborger@library.in.gov) if you would like to nominate yourself or someone else.

Advanced circulation training

Evergreen Indiana Advanced Circulation class will cover a variety of topics, including in depth discussion and techniques of library cards, patrons, items & fines/fees. Basic Circulation class is a prerequisite.
